Tenette Ludlow - Vejer
What is your name, age, where do you live and how long have you lived in Vejer?
Tenette Ludlow, age 36, live in Vejer in Cadiz province, been here for 7 years this September.
What nationality are you and your partner?
I am Irish, my partner Nigel Anderson is English, from Yorkshire
Do you work and if so what do you do?
We run a small intimate guesthouse in Vejer, and Nigel is a writer.
How many children do you have and how old are they? (Aug 09)
We have an 18 month old boy called Sonny, and a baby due in Oct 2009
Where was he/she born?
He was born in hospital in El Puerto Santa Maria, Cadiz province
Did you have good ‘birth experience’?
No - he was 2 weeks late, I was induced, went through labour but couldn't deliver him, emergency c-section in the end - he weighed 4.5 kilos.
Did you do any ante-natal classes?
Yes, I was prepared for a natural birth, but it didn't work out that way!
Would you do anything differently next time around?
Try not to have an epidural
How do you find juggling your work and looking after your child/children?
I share the childcare with my partner Nigel, so I'd say I have it quite easy! The only complication is that we live in the guesthouse, so have to keep guests happy as well as a toddler.
Have you altered your opinion of living in Vejer since you had a child? Do you ever think of returning home?
Not really, although a garden would be nice! We are not ready to return home for a good while yet.
How child-friendly would you say Vejer and the surrounding area is?
Very child friendly, in that children are welcome everywhere, at any time of day or night, but there are not many activities for young children.
How do you rate the Pediatric care where you live?
Not great, very old fashioned - to be honest I avoid doctors unless absolutely necessary, and so far we've been fortunate not to need anything beyond vaccinations.
What are the amenities like for children where you live?
For older children there are lots of activities - summer camp, sports, swimming classes, dancing - but not a lot for young toddlers, just swimming.
For you, what do you think the most challenging aspect of bringing up a child in Vejer has been so far?
I think it would be the lack of family support.
Do you use any form of childcare? If so how would you rate it?
Will be using a Nursery part time from mid September, so can't say yet how I rate it. It's a new private one. The Public one in Vejer is very good, but over subscribed and you have to send your child full time, otherwise you lose the place. The private one is more flexible, will suit our needs better.
What improvements would you like to see in the region for children?
There are very few places to take children to play safely at a cafe or restaurant - my toddler will not stay in his buggy like the spanish children seem to.
What couldn´t you live without in Vejer?
A car and cbeebies!
What could you live without?!Locals advice on childcare especially how many clothes he should be wearing!
