Umbria, in central Italy, is one of the smallest Italian regions and the only peninsular region that is landlocked bordered by Tuscany to the west, Marche to the east and Lazio to the south. The region is characterized by hills, woodland, mountains, valleys and castle topped Medieval hill towns remarkable for their historical and artistic heritage. Perugia is the capital city of the region, located about 160 kilometres north of Rome.
