Alster Lakes

January 17, 2018 | Activities, Germany, Hamburg

The Inner and Outer Alster Lakes are a central part of Hamburg city life. Whenever the sun is out, they fill up with sailers, paddlers and rowers. The Binnenalster (Inner Alster) is the smaller of the two lakes and the Außenalster (Outer Alster) is the larger one. The Outer Alster is surrounded by ancient trees, green parks and beautiful mansions of the Winterhude, St. Georg and Rothenbaum districts. Boats, canoes and kayaks can be hired at many spots all around the lake. Stand-up-paddle is also very popular. In cold winters the Alster can freeze over providing an extra-large ice-skating rink for the locals. Be sure to get a family photo in front of the fountains in the lake.

Really beautiful place to take a boat trip with the family or to just have a walk/bike ride. There is barbecue area as well as plenty of picnic spots. Dont forget to buy a Alsterwasser (Shandy!). The sculpture in the middle is slightly freaky – my children are scared of it! (Kate Pinkerton)
