Furniture Restoration in Barcelona

Amanda Paterson was brought up in Kent in the UK and has a degree in French and Spanish from Exeter University. She worked in the European Commission and European Parliament in Brussels before moving to Barcelona with her husband and children. Amanda saw her move to Barcelona as an opportunity to escape office life and invest in her passion for furniture restoration. After spending a few years at the Escola de Restauració d’Antiguitats (ERA) Amanda launched VerdeGris, which is located at Mercantic in Sant Cugat.

Since opening its doors in 1992, Mercantic has offered a permanent Flea Market with plenty of furniture, antique objects and curiosities and has become the centre of reference for antiques and decor of all styles and as such attracts a very diverse clientele, varied in taste, nationality, appreciation and budget, from all over Europe. You get to see very culturally defined attitudes to furniture appeal and purchase.

Mercantic brings together around one hundred traders in an area of approximately 15,000 m2 divided between the Nau Central and Les Casetes, small shops made of wood of different colours. Every weekday a diverse range of traders open their stalls and weekends this number increases. A Sunday morning in Mercantic is always colourful and the first Sunday of every month, in the morning, Mercantic becomes a big market of books, records, second-hand clothes and curios in addition to the permanent stall holders.

In their own words

I have a passion for tables, a table is at the heart of everything, everyone gathers around a table, a table gathers an incredible aura over the years, I like to feel it has lived many stories, I try to respect that when bringing it back to its best. The objective is not to bring it back to perfection but to allow it to show its personality. The right table in the right room is not only an essential but a true object of beauty, start with the table, the rest will follow.” Amanda
