Berchtesgaden

January 17, 2018 | Activities, Germany, Munich

Berchtesgaden is a municipality in the German Bavarian Alps. It is located in the south district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, near the border with Austria, some 30 km south of Salzburg and 180 km southeast of Munich. To the south of the city the Berchtesgaden National Park stretches along three parallel valleys. Aside from exploring the charming little mountain town, along with the remains of the Nazi stronghold on the Obersalzberg, the Eagles’s Nest and Hitler’s Berghof, you can sail on the Königssee, hike the alpine meadows, tour the salt mine and visit the local hofbrauhaus.

A beautiful place for a family day out. The perfect place for a hike, or if you fancy something more leisurely, take a boat across the Konigsee (listening out for the boat master and his trumpet solo in the middle!) and disembark at beautiful St. Bartholoma (as seen on the front of many a Bavarian Guide book!). Here you can relax over lunch in the bier garten whilst smaller members of your family enjoy playing at the water’s edge. Equally beautiful in the winter. One to put on your must see list.
