Il Crocifisso del Tufo Necropolis, Orvieto

December 14, 2017 | Activities, Italy, Tuscany & Umbria

This large Etruscan necropolis is laid out in streets and blocks, in a manner thought to mimic the Etruscan town that once stood there. Located on the north side of Orvieto’s cliff, the necropolis dates back to the sixth century BC and is named after a sixteenth century cross dug out of tufa rock, which is kept in a small chapel under the San Giovenale area. Guided tours are available.

Though all of the artifacts have been removed to museums, kids will enjoy the chance to wander the narrow lanes and go inside some of the dark (creepy!) tombs. (Kerry Waldron)
