Founded by journalist Carrie Frais and education consultant Jane Mitchell to highlight the incredible region where they live, Maresme Connect is packed with local tips, inspiring stories and ways to connect with others in the area. 

Maresme Connect, the premier English-language online platform for residents and visitors in the Maresme region, is relaunching with an expanded vision to connect, inform and support the region’s growing international and local community.

Founded by journalist Carrie Frais and education consultant Jane Mitchell (pictured above), Maresme Connect is a trusted resource for experiences, services, restaurants, accommodation and education across this beautiful region just north of Barcelona City. With its enhanced website and a newly launched community forum, the Maresme Connect platform is taking its role as a hub for information and connection to the next level.

Maresme Connect, which partners with the Maresme Tourist Board, has evolved to meet the needs of a changing population, providing not just practical listings and guides, but also insights into the people and businesses that shape the region.

Bridging a Growing International Community

The demographic landscape of Maresme is changing rapidly. According to Catalonia’s Institute for Statistics (IDESCAT), the foreign-born population in the region has tripled in the past two decades, now accounting for 13% of its nearly 470,000  residents.

A Platform Built on Local Knowledge & Passion

Maresme Connect was born out of a deep love for the region and a commitment to helping others navigate and enjoy all that Maresme has to offer.

“In the aftermath of COVID-19, the value of community and connection has never been more important,” says Jane Mitchell, co-founder. “Through our platform, we aim to bring people closer together, highlighting opportunities for collaboration and supporting local businesses. It’s about fostering a sense of belonging and celebrating what makes Maresme such a special place to call home.”

Meet the Founders

Jane Mitchell

Originally from the UK, Jane has lived in Barcelona since 2003 and Maresme since 2008. As a partner of the family website MumAbroad and a leading contributor to The Good Schools Guide, Jane has dedicated her career to supporting international families in Spain. Jane is passionate about exploring and writing about Maresme’s towns, beaches, history, gastronomy and culture. She currently resides in Alella. 

Carrie Frais

A British-born journalist, entrepreneur and podcaster, Carrie has lived in Maresme for over 15 years. She is the founder of No20, a coworking & events space in Vilassar de Mar, designed to bring together Maresme’s creative and digital community. She is also the founder of MumAbroad, one of Europe’s leading English language websites for the International Community, During COVID-19, she edited and co-wrote #LivingTheDream: Expat Life Stripped Bare, shedding light on the realities of life abroad. Carrie lives in Cabrils with her two teenage children and various animals.
