January 30, 2024 | Blog, Education

Emilio Sánchez American School (formerly ES International School) is an outstanding international school offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) followed by the American High School Diploma.

Located on a stunning campus close to Barcelona city centre, the school sits alongside the Emilio Sánchez Academy, an impressive tennis training facility that is unparalleled in the region.

Founded in 1999, ES American School is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024. We caught up with the school to find out more about their unique offering and emphasis on sporting as well as academic excellence.

What sets ES American School apart from other international schools?

ES American School is set on a beautiful campus alongside the Emilio Sánchez Academy. The school provides opportunities for students to combine tennis and academics at the highest level. Emilio Sánchez Academy is a high-performance training centre and recognised as one of the most prestigious tennis centres in the world.

The education we offer within ES American School is also renowned and many of our students come for the academics. These students take part in our PE program, giving them one hour of sport each day.

Our campus is a truly international one with students coming from over 40 different nationalities and speaking over 20 different languages. Our students generally perform well above international averages.

We have amazing sporting facilities, including:

  • 27 tennis courts
  • Padel Courts
  • Basketball courts
  • A Gymnasium equipped with the latest Technogym equipment
  • A football pitch
  • Fronton courts
  • Swimming pool

What education system do you follow?

Our Elementary School is an IB PYP (Primary Education Programme) World School. This gives our youngest children a firm foundation in their educational journey, with student-centered learning encouraging curiosity and enquiry. Here our students put their learning into action by making changes in the world around them.

Our Middle School offers an exciting enrichment program and in High School, we have an extensive and rigorous AP (Advance Placement) offering. Students graduate at 18 years old with an American High School diploma and the significant majority of our students attend renowned universities, many gaining a tennis and/or academic scholarship.

Students can also choose to homologate their studies as we also offer the Spanish and Catalan programs.

How would you define your educational philosophy and how do you innovate in the field of education?

We have a responsibility to prepare our students and ensure they have the skills for the future in our rapidly changing world. We expect and encourage students to embrace AI (artificial intelligence) as a tool to accelerate learning and develop excellent critical thinking skills. A robotics program is also offered.

Our ‘Character Matters’ is also extremely important to us and this encourages students to embrace and demonstrate all of our key values. These are recognized in our Spirit House system where students earn points for displaying these values.

Our school is small by design, with no more than 150 students. This allows us to offer very personalised attention, with an average of 10 or 15 students per class.

How would you sum up your success as you celebrate the school’s 25th anniversary?

The success of the last 25 years is reflected in the achievements of our students. We are very proud of them and how they reflect our values in their respective paths in a globalised world. Among our alumni, in addition to Grand Slam winners, there are others with successful university careers and who have excelled in the business world.

Our recent graduates include a student at Princeton on a scholarship, where she continues to play tennis and study, an alumni who now works in one of the most important television rights companies in Japan and one of our former students who has become a great activist in defence of the environment with his own NGO to name but a few.
