Espai Obert La Serra, Sant Pere de Ribes

Espai Obert La Serra is an alternative school in Sant Pere de Ribes for children aged 3 to 12, that follows a child-led pedagogy in a unique woodland setting.

Founded in 2013 by a group of families looking for a better education for their children, Espai Obert La Serra is now a thriving community of local and international families. It is also one of the few alternative schools fully regulated by the Catalan government.

The school has attracted families from all over the world as well as many local Catalan families, creating a unique multi-cultural community.  Families play an important part in the day-to-day running of the school and also help to organise end of term celebrations for each season, local celebrations like Carnaval and Castañada, and regular family outings.

Curriculum

Child-centred learning

In line with the established “Educación Viva” pedagogy, children are given the opportunity to shape their learning according to their own developing interests. In the Infant section, children can choose from opt-in daily proposals, whilst in Primary, children develop and commit to their own personalised learning programme.  Emphasis is placed on developing the critical skills of independence, self-expression and healthy conflict management.

Small groups

There are 10 children per year in the Infant section and 15 in Primary, with a high ratio of educators to children.
