The Tierpark Hagenbeck is a zoo in the Stellingen quarter of Hamburg. The collection began in 1863 with animals that belonged to Carl Hagenbeck Sr., a fishmonger who became an amateur animal collector. ou can admire almost 15,000 animals in the Animal Park and in the Tropical Aquarium. Other highlights of Europe’s most charming zoo include pony rides, a fairyland miniature railway, a petting zoo and a large play area. During the summer, the park remains open until late into the evening and offers a highly varied range of events. Hamburg Zoo is open all year round but opening times may vary. Check the website for more details.

Not a massive fan of zoos but of course the kids love them. They get a chance here to feed the animals and there is a good sized playground and aquarium. Its quite pricey so make sure you take your own food and drink and avoid the shop at all costs. Try to avoid going November to March as there is generally renovation work going on and parts are closed. They also offer children’s birthday parties (from 6 years old) and a variety of events/workshops for kids. (Kate Pinkerton)
