September 15, 2025 | Blog, Education

Hamelin-Laie is a vibrant international school for students aged 1 to 18, located just outside Barcelona in Montgat. They offer a rich multilingual programme, and in secondary, students can choose between the Spanish Bachillerato or the IB Diploma. Both pathways prepare them for entry into top universities worldwide. With more than 1,450 students from over 50 nationalities, the school provides a truly diverse, multilingual, and inclusive environment.

We spoke with them to find out more about how they nurture academic excellence, global-mindedness, and a strong sense of community for their students and families.

Hamelin-Laie recently joined the Nord Anglia family of schools—what changes or enhancements has this brought to the school experience for students and families?

Since joining Nord Anglia in August 2022, we’ve made significant progress as a school community. We’ve built partnerships with world-renowned institutions such as MIT, Juilliard, and UNICEF, giving students access to unique learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. We also launched the Nord Anglia Global Campus platform, which allows students to connect and collaborate with peers across the world. By being part of a global family of leading schools, we have strengthened our focus on innovation, cultural exchange, and access to outstanding educational resources.

This year you’re updating your curriculum—can you share what’s changing and how these updates will benefit students at every stage of their education?

Our curriculum continues to be anchored in the Spanish national curriculum, but we are now integrating the framework of the International Curriculum Association (ICA). This combination ensures academic rigour while offering a global, future-focused education. The ICA approach introduces transdisciplinary themes, inquiry-based learning, and key global competences such as leadership, sustainability, and innovation. It also strengthens real-world connections and international collaboration, aligning with Nord Anglia’s global programmes like MIT, Juilliard, and UNICEF. With this approach, our students receive the best of both worlds: a solid national academic structure and the adaptability of an international curriculum.

As an international school, how do you cultivate a strong sense of community among students from such diverse cultural backgrounds?

With more than 50 nationalities represented, our House system plays a central role in building community. Students of different ages are grouped into Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water teams, which encourage friendly competition and mentorship. We also host community events such as the International Potluck and Diada Day, where families and students come together to share stories, food, and performances. These experiences strengthen bonds across cultures and foster a strong sense of belonging.

English is clearly a cornerstone at Hamelin-Laie—how do you ensure language fluency for both native and non-native speakers alike?

English is the core language of instruction at Hamelin-Laie. We provide specialised English and Spanish lessons, along with immersion opportunities through extracurricular activities, camps, and the boarding environment. From day one, both native and non-native speakers receive support to build fluency, which develops naturally through consistent practice across all age groups.

Hamelin-Laie offers both day and boarding options. Can you tell us more about the boarding experience and the kind of environment boarding students can expect?

Boarding students aged 14–18 become part of a close-knit “second family” on our seaside campus. They live in single ensuite rooms, cared for by dedicated house parents, and enjoy healthy, nutritious meals. Academic support, social activities, and weekend trips ensure that students are supported in every aspect of their development. The boarding experience helps them gain independence while building friendships that last a lifetime.

You offer exciting trips and international experiences—what are some recent or upcoming highlights that students have particularly enjoyed?

Boarding students enjoy weekend outings such as museum visits, local festivals, beach days, sailing, hiking, and kayaking. Beyond Montgat, our students take part in global events like the STEAM Festival, Creative Writing Summit, and UNICEF Student Summit, where they work with peers from around the world on real issues. We also participate in the Nord Anglia Europe Global Games, a multi-sport competition for Nord Anglia schools across Europe. Through the Global Campus platform, students can join international challenges, exchanges, and virtual classrooms that provide a truly global learning experience.

How does being part of Nord Anglia Education open up global opportunities for Hamelin-Laie students, both inside and outside the classroom?

Through initiatives such as the Global Campus, international festivals, and collaboration with partner schools, our students access opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. They engage with global challenges, connect with peers worldwide, and develop important leadership and cultural awareness skills.

What role do families play in the school community, and how do you encourage parent involvement and communication?

Families are an essential part of our community. Parents help organise the International Potluck, participate in Diada Day activities, and attend regular events and briefings. We keep communication open through email, newsletters, phone, and parent-teacher meetings, ensuring families feel fully included and supported in their child’s school life.

From early years through secondary school, how do you support students’ academic, social, and emotional development?

We take a holistic approach to education. Students receive academic guidance, language support, wellbeing check-ins, and peer mentoring. Teachers, Heads of Years, and Counselors work closely with families to encourage each child’s personal growth and resilience.

In what ways does Hamelin-Laie prepare students not just for university, but for life in a global, fast-changing world?

We provide a rigorous academic foundation through pathways such as the IB Diploma and Spanish National Baccalaureate. Students also receive university counselling to support their next steps. Real-world projects, international connections, and global partnerships enhance their learning and prepare them to thrive in an ever-changing global landscape.

Summer school at Hamelin-Laie is a popular option. What kinds of activities and learning opportunities do you offer during the summer months?

Our summer programmes for ages 3–16 combine language immersion in English and Spanish with a variety of sports, including football, tennis, golf, and water sports. Students can also take part in creativity workshops and excursions into Barcelona. With both day and boarding options, the programmes are fun and educational, helping students gain confidence and make new friends over the summer.
