Maths: Why the Doubts Are Not the Problem

Parents nearly always describe it the same way: “My daughter is fine at maths but she just has a few doubts. Could you go over them with her?” After teaching mathematics and physics for over thirty years, I have almost never found that to be true. The doubts are real, but they are actually the symptom.

In almost every case, the fundamentals underneath those doubts were never addressed, so the same confusion comes back a month later wearing different clothes. If a tutor only answers the question in front of them, they are treating the symptom. The child leaves the lesson satisfied, but three weeks later they are stuck again on something that looks unrelated. Everyone concludes they are simply weak at maths, but usually, they are missing one specific thing further back than anyone has looked.

Mathematics is a Chain, Not a List

A syllabus is printed as a list of topics, making it easy to assume the subject itself is a list. It is not; it is a chain where almost every link depends on an earlier one. That is why a gap does not stay where you left it, it travels.

  • The Unnoticed Gap: Take a student who has never been completely comfortable with index laws. Nobody notices because a student can survive a lot of school mathematics without ever writing an index as a fraction.
  • The Delayed Symptom: Then calculus starts, and they are asked to differentiate 1/√x. To do that, the first move is to rewrite it as x^(-1/2). That is not a calculus step; it is an index step that happens before the calculus even begins. The student honestly believes they do not understand differentiation, so their teacher patiently reteaches it several times. It does not help, because differentiation was never the problem.

 

 

 

 

The Same Gap Produces Different Symptoms

Here is the scenario I see most often: a student cannot reliably complete the square. It is a small thing, easy to skip, and for a year or two nothing happens. Then it surfaces four times over in four apparently different topics:

  • They cannot find the vertex of a parabola, so sketching goes wrong.
  • They cannot see where the quadratic formula comes from, so they memorise it and misremember it under pressure.
  • They cannot handle certain integrals that need the expression rewritten first.
  • They struggle with circle equations, which are completing the square in disguise.

To the family, that looks like four separate weaknesses appearing across two years, creating the illusion of a child who is hopelessly bad at maths. In reality, fixing that one missing skill improves all four areas at once, which is why progress after a proper diagnosis often looks suspiciously fast.

Why Finding it Takes Longer Than Fixing it

Once you know what is actually missing, repairing it is usually quick. The child is not slow; they simply missed that piece due to illness or a rushed exam schedule. The hard work is in the finding.

You cannot find it by reteaching the whole year, as that wastes months and bores a capable student.

You find it by watching them work and following the failure backward. The interesting moment is never the question itself; it is the exact step where the student hesitated. I keep going back from there until the hesitation stops, which is almost always much earlier than anyone expected. That means a first lesson might be spent on something that looks embarrassingly basic, but that is usually the lesson that changes the year. Rebuilding that broken link properly requires time, time to take the topic apart, explain the logic, and watch the student reconstruct it themselves through harder problems.

What Parents Can Do

There are two effective steps parents can take at home, and both are completely free:

  • Push gently for precision: When your child says they do not understand something, ask for the exact line where it stopped making sense (e.g., instead of “I don’t get functions”). Children are usually very accurate about this; adults are the ones who generalise it into being bad at the subject.
  • Be suspicious of the word “doubts”: If the same doubts keep coming back in new forms, that is a foundation that was never made solid. It will keep resurfacing until someone goes back and builds it.
