Activities for Kids Hamburg

One of the best ways to explore Hamburg is by boat, and a trip on the Elbe or Aster rivers, or through the city’s iconic harbour makes one of the best outdoor activities for kids in Hamburg. There are many different companies offering day trips and tours on boats large and small, and there is even canoe and rowing boat hire, which all make perfect outdoor summer activities for kids. The city has many green spaces, with urban parks and gardens throughout including the magnificent Planten un Blomen. Hamburg boasts many different adventure playgrounds, outdoor fairgrounds and play centres with outdoor group activities for kids such as soft play, mini golf, go karting and more.

The city is also home to a vast zoo, with plenty of play areas and organised activities. The many different clubs, holiday courses and summer camps mean plentiful outdoor sports activities for kids to choose from too.

There are so many indoor activities to do with kids, to keep children of all ages entertained on rainy days, at weekends and during the school holidays. As a major port city, with one of the largest harbours in Europe, it is fitting that the city boasts an impressive International Maritime Museum, with fascinating exhibits and various ships on display. The city is also home to an enormous Airbus airplane factory, offering interesting tours that older children will love and hands-on things for kids to do indoors.

There are several world-famous art galleries in Hamburg, with iconic masterpieces by well known artists and creative workshops in the school holidays. The  city also boasts one of the largest centres for contemporary performing arts in Europe, with theatre productions, concerts, cinema screenings and more. Hamburg is home to the largest model railway in the world, with impressive miniature depictions of Hamburg, the Alps, France, the USA and Scandinavia, and regular indoor activities for young children.

Hamburg has a growing number of stylish child-friendly spaces cafes (known as Kindercaffes) throughout the city centre, with kids corners and organised inside activities for toddlers to occupy little ones while parents enjoy coffee and homemade food. Many cafes also host great events, creative workshops and weekly classes such as pregnancy or mother and baby yoga.
