Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, about 120km from Munich. This is The Original Fairytale Castle – Walt Disney based many a fairy tale castle on this precise one, built by King Ludwig in 1862. Visits are only possible within a guided tour. The guided tour takes about 30 minutes and are offered daily from: 10.00a.m. – 4.00p.m. (Winter opening times) and 9.00a.m. – 6.00p.m. (Summer opening times) with limited capacity. If you plan to spend the whole day here, there is a bistro cafe on the second floor of the castle where you can grab some lunch.

It will appeal to both the fairytale lovers and the photographers in your family. And if you don’t fancy a tour of the inside (for which you have to book ahead by the way) there’s the nicest hike behind the castle itself which is suitable for all ages. Highly recommended. (Emma Coombs)
