Pozzo dalla Cava, Orvieto

December 14, 2017 | Activities, Italy, Tuscany & Umbria

In the heart of the Medieval district of Orvieto there are nine caves and 27 centuries of history. Although you can follow your own archaeological itinerary of Pozzo della Cava (booking is not required), you can also discover it with a guided thematic tour, with wine and food tasting, with educational and recreational workshops. There is always an interesting nativity scene there each Christmas and the first week of January.

There are a few attractions in Orvieto that explore its vast network of underground, manmade caves – some of which date back to the Etruscans – but this is the most child friendly. Visitors descend underground on a self-guided tour through different chambers and grottoes, several of which are decorated with ancient pottery fragments and antique tools. And of course, you exit into a café and gift shop! (Kerry Waldron)
