Preparing for University – The Benefits of a Bespoke Education in Spain

Virtus College is  a British Sixth Form school in Madrid, specialising in the A-Level curriculum. Virtus offers a tailored educational experience with exceptionally small class sizes, equipping students with the skills, experiences, and confidence needed to gain admission to the world’s top universities.

We spoke with headteacher Sandra Radford, who shared her insights into the school’s unique approach, the importance of personalised education, and how Virtus College empowers students to reach their full potential.

What is the philosophy behind everything you do at Virtus College?

At Virtus College, our philosophy revolves around a personalized, bespoke future proof education. We are committed to nurturing each student’s potential by providing an individualised educational experience. By combining rigorous academics with a strong focus on personal growth, we aim to prepare students not just for university, but for life. Our small class sizes, Mentoring Programme, and enrichment opportunities reflect our dedication to fostering independent thinkers, lifelong learners, and confident individuals.

With an average of just five students per class, we ensure unparalleled individual attention. Our comprehensive approach to education includes personalized roadmaps for university preparation, a strong Mentoring Programme, and a robust enrichment curriculum. For young people aiming to pursue higher education, choosing the right curriculum is a big decision. Why do you think A-Levels are the best choice for students preparing for top universities?

A-Levels are highly regarded by top universities worldwide due to their depth and specialisation. At Virtus, students focus on three or four subjects tailored to their strengths and aspirations, allowing them to delve deeply into areas they are passionate about. A-levels also offer an opportunity for students to study what they love and what they are good at. It is not a “one-size-fits-all” model. For example, if they do not like mathematics, they do not have to choose it. This specialization equips them with the critical thinking skills and subject expertise that universities value, while also enabling them to stand out in competitive application processes.

Your class sizes are exceptionally small, with just ten students per class. How does this personalized approach impact the learning experience and academic outcomes?

Our small class sizes are integral to the Virtus experience. With a maximum of ten students per class, teachers can tailor their instruction to each student’s needs, ensuring no one is left behind. This personalized attention fosters a deeper understanding of subject material, boosts confidence, and enhances academic outcomes. It also allows for meaningful relationships between students and teachers, creating a supportive and dynamic learning environment.

The Mentoring Program is another key aspect of Virtus College. Can you tell us a bit about how these one-on-one sessions help students, both academically and personally?

Our Mentoring Program is designed to provide students with individualized guidance throughout their time at Virtus. In these one-on-one sessions, mentors help students set academic goals, overcome challenges, and explore their future aspirations. These sessions go beyond academics, offering a safe space for personal development and emotional support, ensuring that every student feels seen, heard, and valued.

Can you tell us more about your Enrichment Programme? How do these experiences prepare students for university and life beyond school?

Our Enrichment Program is a cornerstone of the Virtus experience, offering students opportunities to develop skills and experiences beyond the classroom. The program is designed to prepare students for their career pathways and offer tangible evidence of commitment to the field which universities value. For example, engineering students will engage in F1 for Schools and Coding in Python, while business students will plan and start up their own company, creating a budget and marketing plans. Additional activities from debating and public speaking, to volunteering and creative pursuits, encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership. These experiences not only strengthen university applications but also prepare students for the diverse challenges they will face in their future academic and professional lives.     

What support does your Careers team offer young people at the school?

Our University Careers team provides tailored support to guide students through the university application process. From selecting the right courses and institutions to crafting compelling personal statements, we ensure students are fully prepared. The team also offers vocational testing, interview preparation, and workshops, equipping students with the tools and confidence needed to succeed in their applications. In addition, we offer tailored sessions to prepare students for entrance examinations such as UCAT, MAT, ESAT which are required to apply for certain courses such as Medicine, Mathematics and Engineering in the UK. 

Could you share an example of how a work experience placement has helped a student gain confidence or clarify their career goals?

One of our students with a goal of studying engineering at the University of Cambridge, UK undertook a placement with a well-known engineering company in Spain. This experience cemented their passion for engineering, gave them real world practical experience which helped strengthen their university application, leading to him being offered an interview at the University of Cambridge. 

Another student with an interest in medicine completed a placement at a local hospital, shadowing doctors and participating in patient care. This experience not only reinforced their passion for the field but also gave them insight into the day-to-day challenges and rewards of a medical career. They returned more confident and focused, with a clearer vision for their future and a stronger university application.

How does Virtus College support and prioritize student wellbeing, and what role does pastoral care play in helping students thrive?

Student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. Our pastoral care system ensures that every student has access to emotional and academic support whenever they need it. Through mentoring and a nurturing school culture, we create an environment where students feel safe and empowered to thrive. By addressing individual needs, and listening to the student body, we help students manage stress, build resilience, and maintain a healthy balance.

Tell us more about the school’s four houses and the house system. How does foster this community and bring the students together?

Our house system is a cherished tradition at Virtus, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie among students. Each house provides opportunities for teamwork, friendly competition, and collective achievements. House events, challenges, and celebrations bring students together across year groups, creating a strong community spirit and lifelong friendships.

Our location in La Moraleja offers a peaceful and inspiring setting for academic and personal growth.
