Why Pyrene Summer Camp Is Redefining the Modern Summer Camp Experience

January 20, 2026 | Blog, Holidays & Travel

A summer camp should do more than fill time during the school holidays. Pyrene Summer Camp, based in the Pyrenees, offers teenagers a rare opportunity to disconnect from screens, reconnect with nature, and build resilience through a guided high-mountain trekking experience. Designed for curious and adventurous teens, this immersive summer camp in Europe focuses on personal growth, teamwork, and real-world outdoor skills, set against some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Pyrenees.

This month´s MumAbroad newsletter was written by Raül Cavaller, Founder of Pyrene Summer Camp, a unique outdoor education project born in the Cerdanya Valley, and shaped by more than two decades of mountain experience.  In this article, he shares the story behind the Pyrene Explorer Expedition, the camp’s flagship high-mountain trekking experience. Designed for curious, adventurous teens, the Pyrene Explorer Edition is a two-week journey through some of the wildest and most breathtaking landscapes in the Pyrenees.

The Story Behind Pyrene Summer Camp

When I look back, sometimes I’m surprised by how naturally this whole adventure unfolded, almost as if the mountains themselves nudged me in the right direction. My name is Raül, and more than twenty years ago I decided to dedicate my life to something that had already shaped me since childhood: the Pyrenees. The mountains were where I learned resilience, teamwork, independence, and that unique joy that only comes after pushing through a challenge you once thought impossible. I wanted to share that with others, especially with young people who were growing up in an increasingly digital world, far removed from the sense of wonder and self-discovery that nature offers.

In 2001, my wife and I rehabilitated an abandoned farmhouse in the Cerdanya Valley. The place was in ruins, but it had soul. We settled in, raised three children, tended a vegetable garden, and cared for a small herd of chickens. Over time, it has become the Pyrene headquarters, from where we run a ski school and an outdoor summer camp.

Life in the Pyrenees: From Abandoned Farmhouse to Summer Camp Headquarters

Of course, not everything was idyllic mountain sunsets and perfectly packed backpacks. The early years were full of challenge, logistical puzzles, financial uncertainty, bureaucratic labyrinths, and the occasional moment when we asked ourselves if we were completely out of our minds.

Over the years, our programs evolved, our team grew, and so did our vision. Pyrene Explorer Expedition was born from the desire to create a truly immersive high-mountain trekking one that wasn’t just a camp, but a life experience. We wanted to take teenagers out of their comfort zones in the best possible way, guiding them through forests of black pine and fir, across turquoise lakes, up to peaks over 3,000 meters high. We wanted them to experience the joy of carrying their own packs, navigating real terrain, sleeping in refuges or under the stars, and discovering that they’re capable of far more than they ever imagined.

What Makes Pyrene Summer Camp Different from Other Summer Camps in Europe

Today, Pyrene Explorer Expedition is a two-week journey through the hidden and wildest  Pyrenees. We limit the group to fifteen teenagers to be able to move quickly, maintain safety standards, and provide individualized attention. They are accompanied by three expert guides who know the mountains like old friends. Together, they share storms, laughter, hot meals in remote refuges, steep climbs, and those perfectly quiet dawns when the world seems untouched.

One of the most rewarding parts of our  work is watching how the mountains change these teenage explorers. At the beginning of the expedition, you see uncertainty: “Will I be able to do this?” “What if I’m not strong enough?” “What if I don’t know anyone?” But day by day, step by step, something shifts. They start trusting themselves. They help each other. They manage discomfort, celebrate small victories, and discover strengths that school or everyday life often doesn’t reveal. And by the end, they stand taller, not just because they’ve climbed peaks, but because they’ve discovered what they’re made of.

The Transformational Impact of a Summer Camp in Nature

That impact, more than anything, is why we love what we do. Every summer brings new faces, new stories, and moments that remind us why we started all of this in the first place. In today’s world, where teenagers are constantly bombarded by screens, notifications, and pressure, offering them a space to connect with the pulse of nature, feeling rain on their faces, the strength of the wind atop mountain peaks, the fatigue after a steep climb, or the hunger after a long trek… feels more important than ever. The mountains quiet our mental noise, leaving room for only what truly matters: here, we breathe, we explore, we simply are.

For teens looking for something wild  to do this summer, Pyrene Explorer Expedition offers the opportunity to learn real outdoor skills: navigation, high-mountain safety, teamwork, leadership, Leave No Trace principles, and how to thrive even when conditions get tough.

Why Outdoor Summer Camps Matter More Than Ever

After more than two decades, I’m still grateful that the mountains nudged me toward this path. And every time I watch a new group set off into the wild, I’m reminded that we’re not just running a camp, we’re helping shape confident, resilient, curious young people who will carry these experiences with them for the rest of their lives.

Key differences of the Pyrene Summer Camp include:

  • Small group sizes (maximum 15 teenagers)
  • Three highly experienced mountain guides
  • Multi-day treks across remote Pyrenean landscapes
  • Overnight stays in mountain refuges and under the stars
  • Emphasis on autonomy, teamwork, and leadership

This structure allows the camp to maintain high safety standards while offering personalised guidance, something many large-scale summer camps in France or elsewhere in Europe cannot provide.
