Become a granny aupair in over 50 countries

October 31, 2022 | MumAbroad Life Video Channel

In 2010, Michaela Hansen had a brainwave – why can’t older women be aupairs too?

Many women aged 45+ have rich life experience either bringing up their own children or working in child education and childcare. Aupair visas tend to grant younger women visas up to a year and over, but many families complain that having a young aupair is like having a ‘third child’! In many cases with newborns, it’s the granny’s experience that saves the day.

Through Granny Aupair, older women can become a granny aupair and find placements in over 50 countries across the world. Placements can be as short as 3 months or longer, depending on the family and visa requirements.

Do you need qualifications to become a Granny Aupair?

As Grania Grözinger from Granny Aupair tells us, there is no obligatory training for granny aupairs. All you need is to do is ‘be up for it’ says Grania.

Childcare can be tough, but thousands of women aged 45 to 80 are hungry to refresh themselves before raising their own grandchildren, or they miss raising children, or they simply want a new adventure. Grania says most people wanting to become a granny aupair are 60-70.

Granny Aupair also runs an optional training programme from their base in Hamburg, Germany.

MumAbroad was founded in 2007 as a resource for expat mums who struggled without the support of their extended family.

By 2014, the network had grown to include information on child-related services, schools, family activities, shops, family holidays and restaurants across Spain and three other European countries.

The international network is proud to feature a Women in Business directory, giving home-country, expat and immigrant women a platform to reinvent themselves after maternity leave and serve the MumAbroad community. You can read our entry for Granny Aupair here.
