We talk to Valerie Aston, mum of three teenagers and a business advisor based in Normandy, about how she helps expats start a business in France.
She founded Start Business in France in 2009 to help English speakers create and manage their small businesses, and provides a range of services for everything from taxes, legal business regulations and administration – she’ll even run the administrative side of your business for you.

[3:00] If I was in France and wanted to start a small business, but I don’t know how to go about it, how exactly can you help me?
Valerie Aston: “There are several services. Firstly, there’s the forum, where if you want to start a business but you’re stuck on a few questions and you want my support along the year, you join and you can ask as many questions as you want throughout that year. There’s the business school, which I renamed the Power Hour, where you’re ready to go and you just want to bounce as many questions off me so you know where you stand. We can go through everything – regulations, timing, structure – so when you come out you say ‘Wow, there’s a lot of info, but I know where I’m going!’. I can also register your business for you, and I run online courses, so last year I started to help people learn to manage their small businesses themselves too.”
