Kollwitzplatz is a large square and park named after artist and former resident Käthe Kollwitz. There are three different playgrounds for children and a sculpture by the artist, which was erected opposite the site of her residence in 1950, is popular with young children for clambering on. In total, the square is about 6,000m2 in size and is situated in the heart of the residential area Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. Kollwitzplatz has lots of cafes which welcome small children. Since 2000, a weekly market has been held on Kollwitzplatz on Saturdays between 9 am and 6 pm, and there is an eco-market on Thursdays with plenty of fresh and organic produce. The Kollwitzmarkt, a Christmas market on Sundays in Advent, is one of the most popular markets in Berlin and has become a tourist attraction.

This is an excellent place to go to meet people as its just full of mums and buggies! When I first moved to Berlin with my husband I didn’t know anyone and I have met quite a few friends here. The playground itself has fantastic wooden toys/equipment and separate areas for young/older children with swings, slides, climbing frames etc. Definitely worth a visit! Highly recommend. (ML)
